Apple-Sauce Biscuits


(recipe from a cooking book)
Makes 36

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter or vegetable fat, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup thick apple sauce 
  • 1/8 tsp grated lemon rind
  • 1 cup plain all purpose flour 
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp bicarbonate soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Step One

 Preheat oven to 190°C/375 °F/ Gas 5.

Step Two

 In a medium bowl, beat together the sugar and the butter or vegetable fat until well mixed. Beat in the apple sauce and lemon rind.

Step Three

 Sift the flour, baking powder, bicarbonate soda, salt and cinnamon into the mixture and stir to blend. Fold the chopped walnuts.

Step Four

 Drop teaspoonfuls of dough on a lightly greased baking sheet, spacing them about 5 cm / 2 in apart.

Step Five

 Bake the biscuits in the center of the oven until they are golden brown, 8-10 minutes. Transfer the biscuits to a wire rack to cool.
